`Umar Ibn al-Khattaab

31 01 2007

Ibn `Umar radhi Allaahu anhu said, “After `Umar was stabbed, I placed his head on my lap. He said, ‘Place my head on the ground.’ Thinking that that was simply restlessness on his part, I did not do as he asked. Then he said, ‘Place my cheek on the ground - may you have no mother! Woe upon me, and woe upon my mother, if Allaah `Azza wa Jall does not forgive me.’”

And when Umar ibn al-Khattaab radhi’Allaahu anhu was in the final moments of his life, al-Mughirah bin Shu’bah radhi Allaahu anhu said to him, “Congratulations to you for Paradise, O Leader of the Believers.” Though one should not say such statements to someone while he is healthy, it is recommended to do so when someone is dying, so as to help him have good thoughts about Allaah subhanahu wa ta’ala.

“O Ibn Umm al-Mughirah,” `Umar radhi Allaahu anhu said, “And what makes you know (that I will enter Paradise)? By the One Who has my soul in His Hand, if I possessed all that is in the east and in the west, I would have ransomed it all to be saved from the terror of the beginning [of Judgement Day (and that which happens during it in terms of accountability)].”

“…Indeed the sky groans…”

mountain cloud

On the authority of Abu Dharr radhiAllahu anhu who said that the Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu alaihi wasallam said,

“I can see what you do not see, and I can hear what you do not hear. Indeed the sky groans (the large number of Angels in the sky make it heavy so that it groans) and it has a right to do so. There is not an area equal to that of four fingers, except that an Angel is prostrating to Allaah therein. By Allaah! If you knew what I know you would laugh little and weep much, and you would not enjoy your wives in bed. But rather you would come out onto the hills, supplicating and praying fervently to Allaah.”

[Ahmad, at-Tirmidhee, Ibn Maajah: Hasan]

[I] Thalaathatul-Usool

20 12 2006

In the name of Allaah, the Most-Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.

Know, may Allaah have mercy upon you, that it is obligatory upon you to have knowledge of four matters:

(i) Knowledge (al-`Ilm), which is knowledge and awareness of Allaah, and His Prophet,

(ii) Action upon that.

(iii) Calling to that.

(iv) Patiently persevering and bearing any harm encountered upon that way.

The proof is the saying of Allaah, the Most High: “By time, mankind is in loss, except for those who truly believe and worship Allaah Alone, and do righteous deeds, performing that which is obligatory upon them and avoiding that which they are forbidden, and enjoin one another with patient perseverance upon obedience to Allaah and in facing harm and trials.” [Soorah al-`Asr]

Ash-Shaafi’ee, may Allaah, the Most High, have mercy upon him, said: “If Allaah had sent down to His creation no other proof besides this Soorah, it would have been sufficient for them.”

Al-Bukhaaree, may Allaah have mercy upon him, said: “Knowledge precedes speech and action and the proof for that is the saying of Allaah, the Most High, “Know that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah, and ask forgiveness of your Lord for your sins.” [Soorah Muhammad: 19]. So He began by mentioning knowledge before speech or action.”

[Explanation of the Three Fundamental Principles of Islaam, by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-`Uthaymeen hafidhahullaah]

Keeping busy…

25 11 2006

…with the present
rather than the past or future.

What is the point in slapping your cheeks or rending your garment in sorrow over something you missed or some calamity that befell you? What is the point of focusing your thoughts and feelings on some incident that has passed so as to increase your pain and make you fall apart?

If it were possible to reach into the past and change it’s events which we did not like, and alter them the way we like, then going back to the past would be essential. We would all rush to go back and erase the things we regretted doing and increase our share of good fortune. But that is impossible, so it is better for us to focus our efforts on what will help us get on with our lives, for that is our only means of compensation.

This is what the Qur’aan drew attention to after Uhud (a battle named after a mountain in Madeenah), when Allaah said to those who were weeping for the slain and regretting going out to the battlefield:

“Say: “Even if you had remained in your homes,
those for whom death was decreed would certainly
have gone forth to the place of their death,”“

{Surah alee-Imraan: 154}

“Be certain that happiness is
like a planted flower that has
not yet blossomed, but it is
certain to appear.”

[You can be the happiest woman in the world]

Ibn al-Munkadir

10 11 2006

During his final illness, Ibn al-Munkadir began to cry. “Why are you crying?” he was asked. “By Allaah,” he said, “I am not crying for the sins I know I perpetrated, but instead because I fear that I did something I considered to be minor, when with Allaah (i.e. in His Judgment) it is a huge sin.”
[Min Qasas as-Saaliheen]

al-`Uboodiyyah

21 10 2006

|Imam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah|
[Madarij as-Saalikeen 1/100-101, 105]“The Dispraise of Al-Hawaa (Desire) by Ibnul Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah”

`Uboodiyyah is a comprehensive term that asserts the meaning of the Aayah:

You Alone do we worship and You Alone do we seek for Help. (Qur’aan :5)

It comprises the slavery of the heart, tongue and limbs to Allaah ta`aala. The slavery of the heart includes both the Qawl (saying of the heart) and `Amaal (actions of the heart). The Qawl of the heart is the belief (I`tiqaad) in what Allaah has informed about His Self, His Names and Attributes, His Actions, His Angels, and that which He revealed in His Book and sent upon the tongue of His Messenger Muhammad sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam.

Û©

The `Amaal of the heart include love for Allaah, reliance upon Him, turning to Him in repentance, fearing Him, having hope in Him, devoting the Deen sincerely to Him, having patience in what He orders and forbids, having patience with His decrees and being pleased with them, having allegiance for His pleasure, having humility for Him and humbling oneself in front of Him, and becoming tranquil with Him.

The Qawl (saying) of the tongue is to convey what Allaah has revealed (in the Qur’aan and authentic Sunnah) regarding Himself, His Names and Attributes, His Actions, His Commands, His Prohibitions, and all that is related to this Deen), to call to it, defend it, to expose the false innovations which oppose it, and to establish its remembrance and to convey what it orders.

The `Amaal (actions) of the limbs include the Salaat (prayers), Jihaad, attending the Jumu`ah prayers and the rest of the Jamaa`aat (congregational prayers), assisting those who are unable, and acting with goodness and kindness to creation, and other such acts.

This comprehensive meaning of the `Uboodiyyah pertains to its specific type. The people who fall under this type of `Uboodiyyah are the believers who obey, love, and sincerely follow the Deen of Allaah ta`aala.

Û©

The second type of `Uboodiyyah is the general one in which all creatures in the heavens and in the earth are subdued to Allaah’s sovereign Authority and Power; everything is subservient to His Will, and Authority; nothing occurs or ceases to occur except by His leave; His is the Kingdom and He disposes the affairs as He pleases. This type of `Uboodiyyah is known as the `Uboodiyyah of Qahr (Subduing) and Mulk (Sovereignty, Kingship, Possession, Mastership, etc.).

So, the part of the Aayah signifying “You do we worship” asserts the adherence to the four principles of `Uboodiyyah:

1. The sayings of the heart

2. The actions of the heart,

3. The sayings of the tongue, and

4. The actions of the limbs.

The other part, “You Alone do we seek for Help,” stresses the fact that the believer must ask Allaah alone to help him establish the `Uboodiyyah and succeed in executing all what it requires.

as-salaamu `alaikum,

I came across this yesterday, quite useful, masha’Allaah. You can listen to a clip of the lectures before purchasing. These two lectures and Qari are my favourite -

The Bearers of Glad Tidings - Anwar al-Awlaqi

“The greatest military general you will find is Khalid bin Waleed; the greatest business man Uthmaan ibn `Affan; the greatest of ash-Shuhaadah Hamza bin Abdul-Muttalib”

“The greatest scholars came out of this Ummah; the greatest mujahideen came out of this Ummah; the greatest Shuhaadah came out of this Ummah; the greatest zuhaad and `abaad came out of this Ummah. This is the greates Ummah brought forth to mankind.”

“Islaam always rises, Islaam is always higher and nothing goes above it, so again if you don’t see this happening then one needs to question not the promise of Allaah, buit one needs to question his `emaan.”

Spirit of Struggle - Abu Abdis-Salaam

“The future is definitely for Islaam, that this affair will certainly reach what is reached by the night and the day, wherever you see night and day, that is where Islaam will reach.”

“The Help of Allaah is indeed near, and victory will come to the muslims, I swear by Allaah, victory is coming to the muslims. The real question is are we going to part of that victory.”

Juz `Amma - Qari Hani bin Abdur-Rahmaan ar-Refa’i
“What are they asking? About the great news, About which they are in disagreement.” [Surah an-Naba]

Five things cause five others…

18 10 2006

Abu Hurayrah, radhiallahu `anhu said, “If anyone has five things then he will not be deprived of five others.

1. He who is enabled to show gratitude will never be deprived of increase of blessings.

“If you give thanks, certainly I will give you more.”

(Surah Ibraaheem: 7)

2. He who is guided to persevere will not be deprived of reward.

“Truly the persevering will be paid their reward in full without reckoning.”

(Surah az-Zumar: 10)

3. One who is inspired to repent will not be deprived of its acceptance:

“And He is (Allah) Who accepts repentance from His servants.

(Surah ash-Shooraa: 25)

4. One who is enabled to seek forgiveness will not be deprived of receiving pardon.

“Seek forgiveness of your Lord; surely He is Ever-Forgiving.”

(Surah Nooh:10)

5. He who is spurred to make supplication is not deprived of an answer.

“Call upon Me, and I shall answer you.”

(Surah Ghaafir: 60)

Someone else added a sixth proposition that one who is encouraged to spend will not be deprived of reward thereof.

“And whatsoever you expend (for good) He shall replace it.”

(Surah Saba’:39)

Do you care?!

15 10 2006

Do you care enough to stand up for your brothers and sisters in Islaam, when you are being called upon for help? It’s time now to prove yourself.

When I received an email this morning, informing me of the recent events taken place in Dr. Ali al-Timimi’s life, I was ashamed at myself for having ignored his plight for far too long. Too engrossed in my own life to think of anything else, hopefully you’ll feel the same way after reading it…

Bismillah at the beginning of this email and at its end.

As you know, this last year has been a test for everyone involved in Ali’s case.

By the grace of Allah, Ali has been returned to the local Alexandria jail. But

it was not in the manner in which anyone expected. If fact there is a good

chance that his conviction will be overturned. But Ali needs your help.

After Ali’s comprehensive loss in court and abandonment by the previous support

committee, a few people offered to help.

Perhaps they decided to help when they heard that Ali was forced to wear the

same prison outfit for 6 months.

Or maybe it was because Ali had to wash that prison jump suit in the toilet. I

do not know how he prayed afterwards. I do not know of a Fiqh chapter on

“praying after you wash your clothes in the toilet”. Do you?

Allah did bless him when another prisoner secretly lent Ali a uniform while he

washed his sole outfit in the toilet. Well that only happened after a gang

member with tuberculosis C– the most virulent strain which currently has no

known cure– beat Ali.

O Allaah release our captured brothers, O Allaah release them, O Allaah, strengthen them, O Allaah make them steady on their faith, O Allaah make possible a means for them, O Allaah handle those who torture them

Perhaps the new group started to help because Ali has been transferred to 5

different prisons in the first 6 months so that his new attorney could not speak

with him.

Then again, it might have been because each prison illegally read Ali’s legal

correspondence so that they would know the strategy for the appeal.

We can probably count 100 different reasons why 1 or 2 people are helping now.

But Allah is more merciful than we were to Ali.

Experts in constitutional law and national security have started to come to

Ali’s defense. Though Ali’s case was confusing to many of us, it was clear to

legal experts: defending Ali is defending free speech… defending Ali means

trying to stop future oppression of Muslims specifically and Americans in

general.

They ask: “How can a man be convicted for life plus 70 years for something he

may or may not have said years before during a 20 minute dinner?”

You know that type of dinner. Many of you had the same type with Ali during the

80’s and 90’s. When you call a few brothers over and “break bread” together.

We’ve tried to explain what’s happening with Ali’s case on a new site. The old

site altimimi.org still works but has been neglected for too long.

The new site is freeAli.org and it’s not complete but it should help Ali’s

friends come to his defense… to speak up for Dr. Al-Timimi.

So why did I write you this email? We have a strong chance– and with Allah is

success– to have a new trial or an outright dismissal.

I mention some of the reasons on the new site: http://freeAli.org.

In brief, we’re very close to proving that the government intentionally lied to

the court and jury. And that usually means dismissal– and with Allah is

success.

So what caused this optimism? We found some old documents from the previous

lawyers and got some new legal power with which Allah blessed Ali.

But the old lawyers won’t give these documents to us unless we pay some of Ali’s

old bills. And the new lawyer needs to be paid.

We need to raise USD 150 000 (one hundred fifty thousand dollars) by Oct 23

which is at the end of Ramadhan 2006. That’s the day that Ali has to prove that

the government spied on him and then hid evidence that shows that Ali was

working with some of the Saudi scholars to avoid a “clash of civilization” and

not the mad-man they described to the jury.

Narrated by Abu Hurairah radhi’Allaahu anhu; The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam said, “Everyday angels come down from the heaven and one of them says, ‘O Allaah! Compensate every person who spends in Your Cause’ and the other angel says, ‘O Allaah! Destroy every miser.’”

So, I do not know if we will have another chance like this to help Ali. All I

can tell you is that the lawyers have told us:

“Rescue Ali now and you’re rescuing yourselves in the future”.

So, we have some of the greatest legal minds of our time working for nominal

fees. They’re treating Ali as indigent and are aghast that we all have abandoned

him. He was our friend, our teacher, our relative, and our student.

Perhaps we forgot that defending the callers to the Sunnah is like defending the

Sunnah itself.

Allah knows what’s in the hearts but I think that we can all testify before

Allah and mankind that the Prophet’s statement refers to Ali. Which statement?

The one that Ali taught us: “Allah mentions and the angels pray for the teacher

who teaches good to the people”.

So Allah has blessed us with an opportunity in these last days of Ramadhan to

rescue Ali today so that we rescue ourselves tomorrow.

Wassalam alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh wa maghfiratuh
